April/May 2026: The Name Game: Rybelsus® is Becoming the “Ozempic Pill”

Contributor: Solomon Agyemang, PharmD Candidate Class of 2026, PCOM School of Pharmacy

Last month during my family medicine clinical rotation, one of my patients Victor sat in exam room with a look of pure confusion. We had just decided to start him on oral semaglutide to manage his type 2 diabetes and to protect his heart. He did his homework and came back thrilled about the convenience of a pill, but he had one nagging question:

“Why does my box say ‘Rybelsus®’ when everyone on TV is talking about – “Ozempic®“?

It’s a question I hear often; the answer will be much simpler.

The Big Rebrand

Novo Nordisk recently announced a major shift. Starting in quarter two of 2026, Rybelsus is getting a makeover. The FDA-approved oral tablets will officially be renamed Ozempic Pill.

The goal is clarity. By bringing the oral and injectable versions of semaglutide under one iconic brand name, the confusion David felt should become a thing of the past.

What’s Actually Changing?

From a clinical perspective: Nothing but the ink on the bottle.

The medication inside remains the exact same semaglutide molecule you know. Here is the breakdown of what to expect:

  • Same Doses: You’ll still find it in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg tablets.
  • Same Power: It remains FDA-approved to improve blood sugar and reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke.
  • New Developments: Novo Nordisk is doubling down on the “pill” format, having already submitted a 25 mg tablet for FDA review.

The Bottom Line: The oral formulation uses an enhanced bioavailability technology, making its efficacy and safety comparable to the previous Rybelsus® doses, but with a name patients will recognize.

What This Means for You

If you are currently taking Rybelsus®, don’t change a thing. Keep taking your medication exactly as prescribed.

The transition won’t hit pharmacies until mid-2026. When it does, your pharmacist will handle the switch automatically as Rybelsus® stock is replaced by Ozempic Pill bottles. If you have concerns, your healthcare team is always the best place to start.

When I told Victor the news, he just laughed. “So, I’ve been taking the ‘Ozempic Pill’ all along? They’re just finally catching up to me!”

He’s right. Change can be jarring, but this move is all about stripping away the jargon. One molecule, two ways to take it, and finally, one name. For patients like Victor, that’s one less thing to worry about.
